How weed mat works
Weed mat, also called ground cover fabric, is a woven polypropylene sheet laid directly over soil or growing beds. Its tight weave blocks the sunlight weed seeds need to germinate, while remaining permeable enough to let irrigation water, rain and air reach the soil below.
Labour and cost savings
Manual weeding is one of the more labour-intensive and recurring costs on any farm or nursery. Laying weed mat once at the start of a season can significantly cut the man-hours spent weeding, and reduces dependence on herbicide application.

Choosing the right GSM
Lighter weed mats (around 90-110 GSM) suit short-term vegetable beds that are replanted each season, while heavier mats (150-200 GSM) are better suited to orchards and nursery yards that see continuous foot and cart traffic across multiple years.
Installation tips
Weed mat performs best when edges are properly pinned or buried to stop wind lift, and when it's laid taut over a level, debris-free surface to prevent tearing.
