Weed Mat for Agriculture: Benefits, Uses & Applications

Weed mat is one of the simplest ways to cut weeding labour and herbicide use on a farm or nursery. Here's how it works and where it pays off.

How weed mat works

Weed mat, also called ground cover fabric, is a woven polypropylene sheet laid directly over soil or growing beds. Its tight weave blocks the sunlight weed seeds need to germinate, while remaining permeable enough to let irrigation water, rain and air reach the soil below.

Labour and cost savings

Manual weeding is one of the more labour-intensive and recurring costs on any farm or nursery. Laying weed mat once at the start of a season can significantly cut the man-hours spent weeding, and reduces dependence on herbicide application.

Where weed mat is used

  • Row crop and vegetable farming between beds
  • Orchard and plantation floors around tree bases
  • Nursery pot yards and container growing areas
  • Landscaped garden beds and pathways
  • Polyhouse and greenhouse flooring

Choosing the right GSM

Lighter weed mats (around 90-110 GSM) suit short-term vegetable beds that are replanted each season, while heavier mats (150-200 GSM) are better suited to orchards and nursery yards that see continuous foot and cart traffic across multiple years.

Installation tips

Weed mat performs best when edges are properly pinned or buried to stop wind lift, and when it's laid taut over a level, debris-free surface to prevent tearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does weed mat stop all weeds?

It blocks the vast majority of weed germination by cutting off sunlight, though a small number of aggressive weeds may occasionally push through seams or planting holes.

Can weed mat be used with drip irrigation?

Yes, weed mat is commonly installed alongside drip irrigation lines, which run beneath or through slits in the fabric.
